We provide a range of arborist courses and assessments for NPTC (National Proficiency Test Council) and City & Guilds certificates of competence (CoC) in Hampshire. All our courses cover the essentials of safety and operation, giving you the skills and confidence in your job.
Arbsystem specialises in providing courses for vocational qualifications, which are needed in forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, and the agriculture sector. If you use a chainsaw commercially, then Chainsaw training is a mandatory requirement under the provisions of PUWER – the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.

What we offer:
Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting Unit 201 & 202
This course, (formerly CS30) is a comprehensive 2 day course. It covers the essentials and is assessed independently to achieve a Level 2 Certificate of Competence,
In this unit, students will learn:
- The basics of looking after your saw
- Maintenance of the chainsaw: how to sharpen and repair
- How to start and check functionality
- How to cross cut timber safely.
You will leave this with confidence in how to use and maintain a chainsaw and those wishing to obtain a certificate will be assessed independently.

Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross Cutting and Small Tree Felling Unit 201, 202 and 203 (Formerly CS30&31)
Many sectors use the chainsaw, it is effective, portable, powerful, but also comes with risk. It requires regular maintenance, technique, and skill. During this 5 day course we will cover:
- Essential chainsaw maintenance
- Cross cutting procedures
- Felling techniques: covering tree size, weight, condition, and species.
During this combined course, learners will get to grips with chainsaw basics and felling small trees as mentioned above, this is quite an intensive course for complete beginners! It is independently assessed. Have a look to see when our latest course is.
Tree Climbing and Rescue Unit 206 and 306 (Formerly CS38)
During this course you will learn the basics of tree climbing and rescue. This course has no prerequisite qualifications, but it is very physically demanding, and rewarding. During this 6 day course you will learn about legislation relating to tree climbing, defects to watch out for before climbing a tree, basic knot tying, change overs, limb walking and a number of different rescue techniques.
Aerial Cutting of Trees using a Chainsaw and Free-Fall Techniques Unit 308 (CS39)
For those wanting to become an arborist, who have the pre-requisites Unit 201 - 203, 206 and 206 (CS30, 31 and 38), this is the ideal course to take your chainsaw skills to the next level.
An essential course to learn the fundamental foundational skills and knowledge in your arborist career.
You will learn:
- The use of a chainsaw within the tree canopy
- Risk assessment & emergency procedures
- Equipment selection
- Preparation and inspection
It is an intensive chainsaw course that will cover chainsaw operations from a rope and harness and is delivered by one of Arbsystem’s qualified instructors.
All our courses are educational, hands-on, and always engaging. We deliver both practical skills and health and safety guidance ensuring you meet the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
All Arbsystem trainers are fully experienced instructors. Our courses involve working with small groups, so you'll enjoy plenty of one-on-one training.
